Unit 2 : Ratio and Proportional Reasoning
Overview:
In this unit, students extend their understanding of ratios and develop understanding of proportionality. They distinguish proportional relationships from other relationships and explore the multiple representations of proportional relationships, including tables, graphs, and equations. Students develop an understanding of unit rate as the constant of proportionality. They graph proportional relationships and understand the unit rate informally as a measure of the steepness of the related line, called the slope. Students use their understanding of ratios and proportionality to solve a wide variety of single- and multi-step percent problems, including those involving discounts, interest, taxes, tips, and percent increase or decrease. Students solve problems about scale drawings and extend their understanding of proportional relationships to similar figures.
